US President Donald Trump has accused his predecessor, Barack Obama, of intercepting his communications at his offices in Trump Tower before the presidential election last year.
Trump took to Twitter early Saturday morning, claiming he had just found out that Obama had his “wires tapped” in New York City before the November 8 election.
“Is it legal for a sitting President to be 'wire tapping' a race for president prior to an election? Turned down by court earlier. A NEW LOW!”
Trump did not provide any information to back up his claim, but went on to say, “I'd bet a good lawyer could make a great case out of the fact that President Obama was tapping my phones in October, just prior to Election!”
The president has also linked his predecessor to a major scandal, which has engulfed his administration regarding alleged contacts with Russian officials.
Trump's Attorney General Jeff Sessions is under pressure to resign for conversations he had with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak in July and September.
“The first meeting Jeff Sessions had with the Russian Amb was set up by the Obama Administration under education program for 100 Ambs...” Trump wrote. “Just out: The same Russian Ambassador that met Jeff Sessions visited the Obama White House 22 times, and 4 times last year alone."
At the time of the conversations, Sessions was one of Trump’s top foreign policy advisers and a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. He played an influential role in supporting Trump after formally joining his presidential campaign in February 2016.
Trump’s national security adviser, Lieutenant General Michael Flynn, was forced to resign after details of his contacts with Russia surfaced last month.
The recent revelations have reignited controversy about the alleged Russian role in Trump’s victory; allegations that both Trump and the Russian government have denied.
